The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) is the State’s Stem Cell Agency. We were created by the voters of California in 2004 when they approved Proposition 71, giving us $3 billion to fund stem cell research in California. We have a simple mission; to accelerate stem cell therapies to patients with unmet medical needs.

Over the last 16 years we have used that money to:

  • Make California a global leader in stem cell research
  • Fund 64 clinical trials in everything from cancer and stroke, to sickle cell disease and HIV/AIDS.
  • Helped develop a cure for children battling a fatal immune disorder
  • Helped people paralyzed from spinal cord injuries regain the ability to live an independent life
  • Create a network of world class medical facilities delivering stem cell therapies to patients

Our funding has helped generate more than $11 billion in additional sales and tax revenue for California, and created more than 56,000 jobs. Since 2015, we have been able to attract $8.9 billion in industry investment in researchers and companies we have supported. That money will help those promising therapies complete the clinical trials needed to show that they are both safe and effective.
