Call for Postdoctoral Nominations (deadline March 24): Stem Cell Training Grant
Dear colleagues:
One postdoctoral position is being vacated on our training grant in Stem Cell Biology, so we need to make an appointment to fill this position. We encourage you to nominate an appropriate candidate.
The nominee must have received a Ph.D. or a professional doctorate in a medically-related field, and must be pursuing, or planning to pursue, research with a mentor in some aspect of stem cell biology (broadly defined). Trainees are not required to be California residents or U.S. citizens.
The program will pay tuition, fees and health insurance, plus stipends at the level of $36,000-$51,000/yr, depending on seniority level (according to NIH definitions and guidelines). It will also pay for research-related expenses (laboratory supplies, travel, and books) at the level of $10,000/yr.
Please note the following:
- An important aim of the training program is to provide training for a wide variety of trainees from scientifically diverse backgrounds.
- We are encouraged by the funding agency to make special efforts, consistent with the law, to recruit and retain trainees from many different backgrounds, including under-represented minorities.
- The Mentor is expected to have an active, securely funded research program in an area related to stem-cell research (broadly defined) including diseases or conditions that could potentially benefit from stem cell research.
- Nominations will be reviewed by a selection committee consisting of members of the training program who are not nominating candidates.
- The candidate will be appointed for a period of one year. Any renewal will be contingent upon our securing additional funding for the training program.
Nominations for each candidate should include:
- Current CV and statements of research interests for the candidate and mentor.
- Statement of the mentor’s current and pending research funding
- A letter of nomination from the mentor, evaluating the candidate’s experience and qualifications, and explaining the nature of the research and training experience proposed for the candidate.
- A statement that the candidate is willing to take the three formal courses as soon as they are next offered: Basic Biology of Stem Cells; Clinical Applications of Stem Cells; and Social, Legal, and Ethical Implications of Stem Cell Research.
- A statement that the mentor is willing to participate actively in the Stem Cell Training Program.
A selection committee will review the above documents, and will interview candidates as necessary. The committee will then provide the Director with a recommendation for the appointment.
Attached is a copy of the funded proposal for your guidance. Please send nominations to me by March 24, 2008:
